A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

NOTE ON PLAGIARISM

Assignments must be all your own work and must not have been copied partly or entirely from any other source, such as books, the internet or from other students’ work. If you wish to use another author’s exact words in a short quotation this must be clearly marked up in inverted commas with the exact source given, including page number, so that your assessor can clearly see which words have been copied and are not your own. Just quoting references used at the end is not sufficient.

Please refer to your Learner Handbook to read the centres plagiarism policy

Assignment Title

Short-Answer Question and Case Studies
(Assignment 1 of 2)

Tasks

This assignment has 2 tasks with one summative deadline.

Task 1:

You will be given two definitions of health. You are expected to explain these definitions in relation to the different dimensions of health (physical, mental, social, intellectual, emotional or environmental).

  1. “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (World Health Organization, 1948).
  2. “Health is a state in which a person is not suffering from any illness and is feeling well.” (Collins English Dictionary, 2018).

Compare and contrast these two definitions. This should be in approximately 250 words. (AC 1.1)

Task 2:

Below are four case studies. You are required to select one of these, and for the case study:

  1. Explain how and why the healthcare associated infection could have been acquired by the client/patient (AC 3.1)
  2. Analyse the infection control measures that you would follow if you were the nurse in charge of the patients ward. These must be specific to the case study (AC 4.1)

Please state clearly on your work which case study you have chosen.

Case Study Options:

a) Carol is a 59-year-old woman with diabetes and was admitted to hospital last week with severely infected leg ulcers. She has now been tested for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), which has given a positive result.

b) Daniel is a 23-year-old man, who is due to be admitted for a Wisdom Tooth Extraction within the next few weeks. As per hospital protocol, he was swabbed for MRSA. He was found to be carrying Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA).

c) Delores is a 98-year-old woman, admitted to hospital following a series of falls. She has been on the hospital ward now for 4 weeks and is now presenting with symptoms of Clostridium Difficile.

d) Mohammed is a 10-year-old boy who underwent a Kidney transplant 10 days ago. All seemed to be going well, however he has now developed explosive diarrhoea which has tested positive for Clostridium Difficile.

This task should be completed in approximately 750 words.
