Group Discussion – Speaking and Listening (assignment 2 of 2)
Tasks
This assignment has 2 tasks with one deadline.
Task 1 : Preparation for group discussion.
GUIDANCE : You will be assigned a topic by your tutor to research and discuss at a group discussion. Your tutor will also allocate you to a group of between 3 and 5 students in total. You should prepare notes for the discussion based on some factual information (for example, statistics or other facts) and some of your own opinions on the topic. Each member of your group will have been assigned a different topic, with the idea that you will all be asked questions on your contribution to the discussion and that you will be able to ask others questions on the topic they have prepared to discuss. You should be prepared to speak on your topic during the discussion for around 2 to 3 minutes and to answer questions for around 2 minutes afterwards. The notes you make for the discussion must be submitted as part of the work for this unit. Word count 250 words (+/- 10%).
AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.4
Task 2 : Group discussion.
GUIDANCE : The group discussion will last for between 15 and 20 minutes (this will depend on the size of the group and could be a little longer). This exercise involves a demonstration of both your speaking and listening skills, so it is important that you listen to the contributions of others, as well as make your own spoken contributions. You should expect to answer questions on what you say and to ask questions of others once they have spoken on the topic they have been given. It is important that throughout the discussion you remain sensitive to the views of others and take account of the audience/other members of the group. Contributions and responses should be measured, appropriate and help to keep the discussion moving onwards. Your tutor will complete a tutor observation record of this discussion to show how you have met all the relevant Assessment Criteria (ACs) listed below.
AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4
NOTE : Tutors should ensure they have all the resources provided to accompany this unit, including tutor observation sheets and suggestion lists for the group discussion.
