Unit 6 - Support positive behaviour in children and young people
This workbook is designed to help you provide evidence for your knowledge, understanding and skills required to support children and young people’s positive behaviour. It requires demonstration of competence in promoting positive behaviour and managing behaviour that challenges.
It contains 3 Tasks and covers the following assessment criteria:

Task 1
Read the scenario before attempting the task:
1. You have been assigned to a new class for the next academic year. During your 1-1 catch up with the Class Teacher she shares information from the previous Class Teacher about three children who demonstrate behaviour that is sometimes challenging. The Class Teacher asks that you undertake some independent research into policies and procedures ready for the start of term staff meeting.
a) Summarise policies and procedures relevant to promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour (LO1.1)
b) Explain effective practice in relation to behaviour management. (LO1.2)
Task 2 LOs
LO2: Be able to promote positive behaviour
2.1
Review expectations in relation to behaviour when working with others
2.2
Explain strategies for promoting positive behaviour according to the policies and procedures of the setting

Use effective role model behaviour for the standards of behaviour expected of children, young people and adults within the learning environment
Task 2
1. There are a number of children in the new class with behaviour needs and the Class Teacher has 3 support workers at all times. You have been asked to do a presentation in a team meeting to show your understanding of the expectations in relation to behaviour when working in a team with others. (LO2.1)
2. Read the behaviour policy of your setting and identify the strategies that are put forward for promoting positive behaviour. (LO2.2)
3. Discuss/reflect on the actions you would use to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected of children, young people and other adults in your setting. (LO2.3)
Task 3 LOs
LO3: Be able to manage behaviour that challenges in the learning enviornment

Demonstrate strategies to minimise disruption in a teaching and learning environment

Task 3
1.
a) Briefly outline a situation where you witnessed a student being disruptive or showing signs of becoming disruptive during an activity in your work setting (PJ3).
b) Use your placement journal to write a reflective account of how you dealt with the situation in order to minimise disruption in the teaching and learning environment. (LO3.1)
2. Identify different types of behaviours that challenges and explain how you would use policies/procedures of your setting to manage these types of behaviours. (LO3.2)
3. Describe an example of a situation where you have provided support or observed a member of staff providing support for a colleague in relation to behaviour that challenges. Explain how the support was given. (LO3.3)
4. A parent has made a complaint to the school regarding the way her child has been dealt with for displaying challenging behaviour. You have been asked to write a short explanation of the referral process that is in line with the policies and procedures of the setting, which will be displayed on the parent notice board. 1.1 Summarise policies and procedures relevant to promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour.
