Description of the assessment
After your work on the drainage design, provisional planning approval has been granted.
The Client has now requested that you progress the design for full planning and tender preparation, to achieve this you will need to produce a Bill of Quantities using MMHW (Method of Measurement for Highway Works) for the Drainage elements of the contract.
Further to this you will need to ensure that the proposed materials are compliant to the Contract Specification, this will be for a series of element from the works. This will be done by testing in the laboratory. The tests include:
- PSV Skid Test
- Surface texture (sand patch)
- CBR formation
- AAV Aggregate
- Grading Subbase
- Surface profile
- Pen Test on Bitumen
The final aspect of your work is to address the CDM requirements to show how your scheme will address construction and future maintenance, this will be in the form of a short report, justifying your design choices.
Marks Weighting:
Specification Testing 50%
Take off and Bill for the Drainage 30%
CDM compliance 20%
100%
Relationship to Programme Assessment Strategy
This assessment introduces aspect of contract documentation and applied health and safety practice which links underlying requirements of many of the modules to be studied in the final year of your degree programme.
Attributes and Skills
You will develop skills around contract preparation and the development of specification writing and CAD work. You will be applying standardised management systems, preparing and developing your skill for professional practice

The rubric has been attached to the Turnitin Submission point and a copy can be found at the end of this brief
Anonymous Marking
Submissions in Turnitin and Blackboard
You must submit your work using your student number to identify yourself, not your name. You must not use your name in the text of the work at any point. When you submit your work in Turnitin you must submit your student number within the assignment document and in the Submission title field in Turnitin. Guidance is available showing how to do this.

this will be professional report show compliance or failure to meet the specification covering detailed aspects for each element, whilst being concise and direct it will be Construction ready |
this will be outstanding and cover detailed aspects for each compliance test , whilst being concise and direct it will align to the requirements of construction document and be robust |
this will be excellent and cover the majority of the detailed aspects for each element, whilst being concise and direct |
The four tests will be logically laid out with consideration to all the fundamental aspects and links to related standards, the specification will be very good and usable |
4 tests aspects will be addressed to a sufficient standard to allow the further development towards a full specification, shortcomings will be very minor |
The Three elements will have been completed but only adequate coverage of aspects including standards and installation etc... addressed |
Although addressed with three included there will be some shortcomings and gaps in the specifications as presented |
The testing will be inadequate or not the minimum of three attempted and little evidence of application of the principles |
Limited work or incomplete and of limited academic value |
Nothing of merit or omitted |
|
Bill of quantities 30% |
All complete and correct with robust evidence trail, cost will have been developed for an item based on a suitable pricing reference such as Spons or Wessex |
All complete and correct with robust evidence trail, cost will have been developed for an item |
All complete and correct with robust evidence trail, thought will have been given to likely costs |
completed to a very good standards with a strong evidence trail and all extensions and descriptions applied and correct |
both aspects addressed with a workable bill and clear evidence trail, some assumptions and the finer detail may require reinspection or editing |
there will be a significant attempt but there will be some minor omissions or errors in the approach, quantities, MMHW descriptions |
the sections will be attempted and evidenced but there will be minor shortcomings and omissions detracting from the final work |
either element the bill or the take off will be omitted or there will be major omissions from the two series 500 (Drainage) or series 700 (Pavements) |

an outstanding defence of key aspects and focus on the current drivers in the industry for auditing aligned to standards |
the defence of key aspects will be excellent and focus on the current drivers in the industry for auditing |
All aspects will have been addressed to a very good standard and the defence of aspects of the design will be logical and clear, mentioning support legal compliance etc... |
All the aspect will be addressed but consideration to supporting detail like standards and the legal aspects will have not been investigated |
There will be coverage of the sections but the depth in areas or the defence raised will be questionable |
