BSc. Undergraduate Research Module NUR5021
Integrated Evidence-Based Professional Nursing Practice
August 21 RNDA cohort, and the FDNA, RNDA and BSc Adult field students undertaking the summative assignment at the same, or in a near period of time.
Summative Research Assignment
This is a 3000-word assignment divided into two sections.
Section 1 of the assignment.
Students will answer 10 questions on a given published research paper, which is of relevance to evidence-based practice. The NUR5021 tuition sessions provide the information the student requires to begin answering each of the set questions.
The answers to each of the questions forms the foundation on which the student builds the critique for Section 2 of the assignment.
Each student receives a copy of the paper to be critiqued.
Each question should be answered in 200 words. This amounts to 2000 words for Section 1 of the assignment.
Section 2 of the assignment.
Section 2 has a 1000-word allowance. The student is required to give an overall professional critique of the paper. The student is required to comment on the research study’s chosen methodology, and whether the intended research aim/s of the study have been met. From information gained from the NUR5021 tuition sessions the student is asked to consider whether a future similar study could be designed and conducted using the same research paradigm, or whether a different paradigm could be used, and if so to explain why.
The student is required to complete the assignment by stating how the knowledge gained on the evidence-based practice/research/topic will be used in the nursing student journey, and how it will then be applied as a nursing registrant.
The paper to be critiqued is:
Eastwood, G.M, O’Connell, B., Gardner, A., and Considine, J. (2009) Patients’ and nurses’ perspectives on oxygen therapy: a qualitative study. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 65 (3) pp.634-641
Particular guidance for students:
Students are expected to source and use other references (not those cited by the research author/s in the given paper) in support of the points they wish to make in sections 1 and 2 of the assignment.
Please do not state each question because this will use up the allocated word allowance. Put Q.1. and provide an answer to Q.1, and then proceed in this way with each successive question. Your academic marker is fully aware of this requirement.
A + 10%, or - 10% of the total word allowance is accepted.
Section 1 Questions:
In your own words please answer the following questions in 200 words each.
What is the focus and purpose of this published study? Please state any research aim/s, and identify if there is any group of people who would find this study of particular interest and if so, state why.
What is the methodology used in this study? Is the methodology appropriate for the aim/s of the study? Please state the reason/s for your answer.
Identify the main reasons why oxygen is administered to a patient. Please use the findings of the literature search undertaken by the researchers to help you to answer this question.
What is the number of the participants in the study, and how were they recruited into the study?
What data collection methods were used? Are these appropriate for the study? Briefly explain your answer. (Note that GME is one of the researchers and that it was GME who conducted all the interviews).

Explain what is meant by an “exploratory descriptive design”.
Discuss the method/s used for data analysis. Is this appropriate to the study? Briefly explain your answer.
Discuss how the data findings are presented. Are the data findings clear?
Do the research findings relate well to the title, and to the stated aim/s of the study? Briefly explain your answer in relation to validity and reliability, two key components of research studies.

Submission dates
The submission date for the DRAFT is Monday 6th March 2023 by 5pm to your Personal tutor. You should receive back around 10% of your work with some comments within 2 weeks. So, continue to work on your assignment if you have relevant sessions and do your independent reading for example.
Final submission date: Thursday 13th April 2023 by 12 noon via Turnitin .
Please consult any information about Turnitin on The HUB. The following timeline gives you some general points:
4 weeks prior to submission : Similarity box opens. It will be labelled with your cohort and submission/module title.
1 week prior to submission – similarity closes and the summative submission route opens.
Immediate similarity results are displayed on first submission. A submission can be overridden as many times as they wish, but subsequent submissions will take around 24 hours for the score to display.
The summative submission route box can be used to gain a similarity score, and then subsequently override previous submission with a newer version, as Turnitin will only hold one assignment at a time. What is in the box at the deadline time will be taken for marking so ensure you are happy with the version of your assignment in the submission box in plenty of time in case of technical issues.

Eastwood, G.M, O’Connell, B., Gardner, A., and Considine, J. (2009) Patients’ and nurses’ perspectives on oxygen therapy: a qualitative study. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 65 (3) pp.634-641
What is the focus and purpose of this published study? Please state any research aim/s, and identify if there is any group of people who would find this study of particular interest and if so, state why.
The study by Eastwood, O`Connell, Gardner, and Considine (2009) focuses on understanding both patients` and nurses` perspectives on oxygen therapy. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes surrounding the administration of oxygen therapy in clinical settings. Specifically, it aims to identify any differences in viewpoints between patients who receive oxygen therapy and the nurses responsible for its delivery.
The research aims include gaining insights into how oxygen therapy is perceived in terms of its importance, comfort, and potential challenges. By examining both sides—patients and healthcare providers—the study seeks to improve the administration of oxygen therapy, potentially leading to better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
This study would be of particular interest to healthcare professionals, especially nurses and respiratory therapists, as it highlights important aspects of patient care and may inform best practices in oxygen therapy management. Additionally, policymakers and healthcare administrators may find the findings relevant, as they can influence guidelines and standards for oxygen therapy in various healthcare settings.
