Assignment Brief

Your coursework assignment consists of two parts:

ASSIGNMENT PART 1:  Application of PRINCE2 on ONE selected Case Study

Select ONE case study from the following two cases:

Case Study One: MSc course

Michel just received confirmation of admission for the MSc Programme and Project Management course at the University of Chester. Michel is so excited by that. That programme is so important for him.

For Michel the project output is the award of MSc degree. Expected outcomes, future benefits from the project are personal. For each stage of a selected project, consider a main approach and possible alternatives, discussing any repercussions of each.

Even before the modules start, Michel needs to initiate and prepare the academic year. That is quite a project for him. And you have been selected to help him for that project.

In order to make that individual project successful, you decided to use and apply PRINCE2© methodology.

First, you review with Michel how to apply the seven PRINCE2© principles all along his MSc project.

Then, you review with Michel how and what to implement the seven PRINCE2© themes all along his MSc project.

Case Study Two: Postal Service

Objectives of the project

Post Office intends to launch a new service to transport goods from a collection point to a delivery point.

Requirement baseline (first version of the functional specifications) is:

  • Requirement 1: Collecting groups of packages from either regular or temporary client companies.
  • Requirement 2: Transportation of grouped packages from either regular or temporary client companies.
  • Requirement 3: Final delivery of grouped packages from either regular or temporary client companies.
  • Requirement 4: Insurance of transported packages at value declared by client companies.
  • Requirement 5: Monitoring of delivery sign-offs.

Market studies justified compliance of the project after two years in service, based upon the following assumptions:

  • Assumption 1: 200 clients’ companies.
  • Assumption 2: 20 kg/package.
  • Assumption 3: 2 packages per day and per company.
  • Assumption 4: all collection and delivery points within 300 km from logistics platform.

Scope of the project

  • Collection of the grouped packages: design, implementation and commissioning of the collection service.
  • Extension of the existing transportation capacity to cover increase of traffic related to the new service.
  • Digitalisation of the new service (orders, deliveries, invoicing, interfaces with Post office information system).
  • Negotiation and implementation of insurance contract with a third party for declared value of the packages.

First, you review how to apply the seven PRINCE2© principles all along this postal project.

Then, you review how and what to implement the seven PRINCE2© themes all along the postal service project.

Questions for completing Assignment Part One

For the case you selected answer the following four questions:

Question 1: How would you suggest to apply each of the seven PRINCE2© principles to the selected case?

Question 2: What would be the approach for each of the seven PRINCE2© principles in that particular project?

Question 3: How would you suggest to implement each of the seven PRINCE2© themes to the selected case?

Question 4: What would be the approach for each of the seven PRINCE2© themes in that particular project?
