Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario

According to the Health and Safety Executive 2020, 3.5% of workers in the construction industry suffer from work related injury, 3.5% are also injured at work. This leads to around 2.1 million working days lost in the industry. Furthermore 40 workers were fatally injured and 4 members of the public in 2020.

You have been employed by the construction firm to help improve their health and safety record on material usage for the construction of a 5-storey office block based at Eccles New Road, Salford. Previously the company has adopted an ad hoc approach to delivering and storage of materials, often taking valuable space up within the site and creating hazards for operative and visitors. As such you have been asked to review the procedures and protocols in place which are utilised at the firm and implement training for staff on how to identify hazards and risk.

Task

The managing director suggest that you produce a written report, which should cover:-

  • An overview of health and safety regulations and legislation related to how to plan and manage for the safe handling and use on the chosen site.

In answering this task make sure you consider the following

  • How regulations impact on the use, storage and handling of a selection of construction related materials which could be located on the construction site.
  • The use of risk management to address significant hazards.
  • The multiple regulations and legislation which would apply to the construction site indicating how to plan and manage for safe handling use.
  • Produce practical examples of different hazards and methods to identify hazards within the construction industry.
