Tasks for Assessment 2

Task 1. (Criteria:P4)

Using schematic provided and the program you developed in UA19A1: Produce a documentation package that will enable the application to be correctly installed and supported, include

a) An I/O listing clearly identifying the field devices

b) Wiring diagrams for each of the input and output sides of the PLC

c) A flow chart of the program with an explanation

Guidance: 1a use the schematic shown for I/O devices, as the level sensors etc will no longer be simulated, but will need I/Os and wired up. 1b must be a hardware diagram (not a FBD or LLD) such as a drawing of a Siemens LOGO showing the I/O connections. 1c flowchart should be drawn with correct systems using a ruler & pen or the flowchart ‘shapes’ provided in MS Word. Evidence: include a (Snip) image of wiring diagram, I/O listing, flowchart, and 100-word commentary

Task 2. (Criteria: P5)

Considering PLC safety issues:

  1. Identify 3 important regulations, standard or directives relating to health and safety when working with programmable controlled equipment. For each, clearly state why they are important and relevant to PLCs. Ensure at least 1 piece of legislation, directive or standard that is specifically for PLC safety.
  2. With the aid of a diagram, describe a safe method for connecting a potentially dangerous machinery that is controlled by a PLC controller and for safety, an emergency stop button.
  3. In the event of a programmable control system not running correctly, give a list of four actions with reasons that you would take to trouble shoot the PLC and remedy the situation.

Guidance: 5-600 word written report and PLC system diagram to include emergency stop.

Task 3. (Criteria: P6)

Communication media is used to connect distributed components of a PLC system.

a) Write an illustrated description on PLC communications using: twisted pair, fibre optic and wireless media.

b) Show their interface connection to the PLC/field device for 3 specific applications.

c) Include a table which summarises their key features, application, advantages and disadvantages for each:

Guidance: Provide reasons for your selecting your applications. Illustrations should be referenced extracts from commercial specifications for each cable type. For comparison, a table could be used. 500 word written report, comparison table and illustrations and examples.

Task 4. (Criteria: P7)

Using network diagrams as appropriate to illustrate your answers describe:

  1. Star and bus topologies being used in a modern programmable controller network system.
  2. A commercial PLC network protocol that could be using to connect PLCs to field devices.
  3. Include its international standard and how this communication protocol links to the OSI 7 layer standard.

Guidance: 4a Should be applied to PLCs and not computers. 4b Commercial PLC network examples include Modbus, Profibus/Profinet and Devicenet. 4c link the selected network to internationally recognised protocols. 500 word written report with illustrations and supporting examples of a real system. A protocol is set of rules/specifications which govern the transmission and reception of information over a network such as OSI.

Task 1: Program Documentation (P4)

P4 Explain the program documentation that has been used for a complex engineering application

I/O Listing: The I/O listing identifies the devices connected to the inputs and outputs of the PLC. Based on the schematic provided in UA19A1:

I/O AddressDevice DescriptionType (Input/Output)
I0.0 Start Button Input
I0.1 Stop Button Input
Q0.0 Conveyor Motor Output
Q0.1 Warning Light Output

Wiring Diagrams: The wiring diagrams for the PLC’s inputs and outputs would connect the devices such as sensors, buttons, and motors to the PLC’s I/O terminals.

For example:

  • Inputs: Start button (I0.0), Stop button (I0.1)
  • Outputs: Conveyor Motor (Q0.0), Warning Light (Q0.1)

Flowchart:

  1. Start
  2. Check if Start Button is pressed (I0.0)
    • Yes: Turn on Conveyor Motor (Q0.0) and Warning Light (Q0.1)
    • No: Stop Conveyor Motor
  3. Check if Stop Button is pressed (I0.1)
    • Yes: Stop Conveyor Motor and Warning Light
  4. End
