Unit 17: Understanding and Leading Change

TASK A: LO1 and LO2

You have recently joined as a Junior Business analyst in a Multi-National Consultancy firm that provides consultancy services to large companies.

One large retail company has been experimenting on a number of new initiatives in searching for a magic solution to counteract online shopping. They’ve tried launching a large-scale programme to monetize the company’s real estate, introducing new marketing campaign, creating a new information system and “big data” approach, consolidating their buying categories, downsizing functions, testing new store concepts and the list goes on. Each of these might make sense individually, but because they haven’t been positioned as an integrated way of coping with a changing environment, employees have become skeptical about senior management’s ability securing the future. LO1 Compare ways in which change impacts on an organisation’s strategy and operations.

The company is seeking advice from the consultancy firm where you work to improve their situation. Your line manager has asked you to do a research on this company and prepare a report for them using at least 1500 words covering the following:

  1. With a real time example, an analysis on the impact of change and the effects it has upon the organisation’s strategy and operations. You need to draw conclusions and recommendations with valid justifications for planning effectively for change and applying change impact analysis.
  2. Evaluation of how change affected leadership, team and individual behaviour within the retail company and the organisational response to change i.e. the measures that the company could have taken to minimise negative impacts of change on organisational behaviour.

Task B: LO3 and LO4

Your line manager also wants you to prepare a second report containing at least 2000 words for the same company covering the following areas:

  1. Making valid decisions and outcomes based on force field analysis in the context of meeting organisational objectives by determining how barriers to change influence leadership decision- making.
  2. Critical evaluation of the effectiveness of leadership approaches and models of change management (situational leadership, change initiation, Kotter’s 8-Step model, Lewin’s change management model) to dealing with the change identified and the extent to which leadership approaches can deliver organisational change effectively applying appropriate models and frameworks.
