The following assessment tasks have been designed to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of this unit. 

All tasks must be completed.

It is an important aspect of the assessment that you are able to demonstrate the application of acquired knowledge to appropriate examples of facilities management.  You should therefore read the individual tasks carefully in conjunction with the relevant assessment criteria in the unit specification.  You should also pay careful attention to the additional guidance (shown in red italics) in the unit specification as this indicates the appropriate level of knowledge required to successfully demonstrate the assessment criteria.

     ii. A comparison of examples of old and modern buildings to explain the advantages and disadvantages of changes in structural design and the components and materials used in their construction.

  1. Explain the factors you should consider when developing a maintenance programme for a commercial or public building. Your answer must include the following:

              i. Typical elements of building fabric

             ii. The range of typical building services

            iii. Relevant processes and procedures for planning, delivering and monitoring the programme.

           iv. The specialists you could use to assist you in developing and delivering the programme (including when and how you would you use these specialists).

2. Using examples of building fabric and building services, describe how different types of maintenance are classified.

3. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using (i) in-house and (ii) outsourced staff resources to deliver building fabric and building services maintenance.

4. Explain how you would manage each of the following resources to ensure maintenance services are delivered to required service levels.

i. In-house maintenance staff

ii. Outsourced contractors

iii. Property management professionals and specialists
