Learning Outcome 1: Be able to justify a topic for research within services for health and social care or children and young people.

1.1 Identify the area for the research project.

For this research project, I have chosen to focus on the impact of mental health services on adolescents within health and social care settings. The significance of this area stems from the increasing prevalence of mental health issues among young people, particularly following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Mental Health Foundation, approximately one in six young people experience mental health issues, underscoring the urgent need for effective support services.

1.2 Develop the aims and objectives of the research project.

The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of existing mental health services for adolescents in improving their overall wellbeing. The specific objectives of the research include:

  • To assess the current mental health services available to adolescents.
  • To identify the strengths and weaknesses of these services from the perspectives of both service users and healthcare professionals.
  • To evaluate the outcomes of these services on the mental health of adolescents, particularly in terms of access, satisfaction, and impact on their daily lives.

1.3 Explain ethical considerations that apply to the area of the research project.

Several ethical considerations are pertinent to this research project. Firstly, confidentiality is paramount; personal data of participants must be handled with care to protect their privacy. Informed consent is also critical, particularly when working with adolescents, as it is essential to ensure that participants, and where necessary, their guardians, understand the nature of the research and voluntarily agree to participate. Additionally, sensitivity in dealing with mental health topics is vital, as participants may be sharing personal and potentially distressing experiences. Finally, I will ensure that participants can withdraw from the study at any time without any negative consequences.

1.4 Complete a literature review of the chosen area of research.

A comprehensive literature review will be conducted to explore existing research on adolescent mental health services. Key studies indicate that early intervention is crucial in addressing mental health issues among young people. Research by Lereya et al. (2015) suggests that access to mental health services can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, barriers such as stigma, lack of awareness, and accessibility issues often hinder adolescents from seeking help. Furthermore, a study by Jones et al. (2020) highlights the importance of tailored interventions that consider the unique needs of young people. This literature reveals a gap in research regarding the effectiveness of specific service models, which this project aims to address.
