In this final assessment, you will focus on diversity and difference and the Equality Act 2010. It is very important to have a level of awareness around diversity and difference when working with clients. Diversity within counselling is vital because as a counsellor you will experience many clients who are different to yourself and who all have had different life experiences.
Part one: As part of this assessment you are asked to read Sam’s story again:
Sam’s family recently moved to the UK from Ghana. Both of Sam’s parents were teachers in Ghana. When Sam turned fifteen years old, the parents decided to move the family to the UK from Ghana because they thought it would be good for Sam’s education.
What is the first image that comes to mind when you think about Sam and Sam’s family? What assumptions come to mind? Are Sam and the family white British and returning to the UK after emigrating to Ghana for a period of time? Or are Sam and the family black African? Perhaps Sam and the family are middle class? What kind of accent does the family have? Are they religious? Does Sam have parents of different sexes or does Sam have same-sex parents? The point of this short story is to illustrate how easy it is to make assumptions without knowing all the facts. Counsellors need to be mindful of and be ready to challenge themselves when he or she makes assumptions which are not based on fact.
From Sam’s story and your reflections, you will write down any personal prejudices, fear and concerns you have that are related to working with difference. How would you work with these within your counselling work with clients?
Part two: You will explain how difference and diversity could impact negatively on client work.

Part One: Reflection on Assumptions and Personal Prejudices
Sam`s story illustrates how assumptions can be made unconsciously based on limited information. When reading that Sam’s family recently moved to the UK from Ghana, the first image that comes to mind is of a black African family. Without any further context, I imagine Sam`s parents are Ghanaian nationals, possibly from a middle-class background, since both parents were teachers. This immediately brings to mind the image of a family valuing education, hence their relocation to the UK for Sam’s schooling.
As I reflect on these assumptions, I recognise that they are influenced by preconceived notions about race, nationality, and class. For instance, there’s an automatic association between Ghana and black Africans, as well as assumptions about their socio-economic status based on their profession. These assumptions, though not necessarily negative, are reductive and highlight how easy it is to stereotype without having all the facts.
In terms of personal prejudices, I realise that my initial thoughts might also stem from societal norms and biases I have absorbed. These can include assumptions about accents, religious beliefs, or family structure. As a counsellor, it’s crucial to actively acknowledge and challenge these biases. If not addressed, they could hinder my ability to provide empathetic and non-judgmental care.
Working through these concerns within a counselling context requires ongoing self-awareness and a commitment to challenging personal prejudices. It’s important to engage in regular reflective practice and supervision to examine how these biases may arise and affect the counselling process. By doing so, I can ensure that I remain open to each client`s unique experiences and identity, fostering a therapeutic environment built on respect and understanding.
