Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise in the Healthcare Sector (MGT3702)

Assessement-2: Individual Essay

The Case Study Beyond Recovery

Founded in 2014, Beyond Recovery is a social enterprise whose mission is to revolutionise the way addiction and mental health are viewed and treated.

Founded by Jacqueline Hollows MSc, Beyond Recovery aims to help people look beyond mere survival and existence, and instead to move forward, with hope, resilience and purpose in life.

Since its foundation Jacqueline has been working within the prison system and the community since then delivering workshops and services to those suffering with addiction and mental health issues and the professionals who support them.  As part of this work Jacqueline has mentored a growing team of practitioners and volunteers; created a number of professional programmes and become known internationally as a speaker.  A keen social entrepreneur, Jacqueline’s call to action is ‘just go do it’.

With over 20 years of delivering services and senior management experience in industry Jacqueline Hollows changed direction in 2012 after learning about a new understanding of how the mind works and its relationship to addiction, compulsion and mental health.  Jacqueline became passionate about eliminating stigma, building communities and revolutionising the way mental health and addiction is viewed and treated, particularly within the Criminal Justice System.

Our Work

As a social enterprise our mission is to make a proven difference to people with repeat offending behaviour, complex mental health issues and drug and alcohol problems who are involved in the criminal justice system. We are committed to growth and impact through empowering prisoners to help themselves and each other through our Apprentice programs and Academy.

Beyond Recovery’s provides evidence-based intervention which enables prisoners to uncover their innate mental well-being and consequently improve their mental health and behaviour in prison. This, in turn, enables them to have a stronger purpose in life and to live a more satisfying and law-abiding life on release.

The impact of this work creates far reaching ripple effects in communities, relationships, careers, business opportunities as well as complete recovery from previously intractable diagnoses. The work of Beyond Recovery is based on an approach called the Three Principles, which was recently described as having a common-sense simplicity with intellectual credibility – this differs from many other approaches to tackling human problems in one fundamental way: it focuses on teaching health rather than treating illness. The model is rooted in a belief that we all have inner mental good health and teaches individuals how to access and sustain this health. You are expected to explore the entrepreneurial behaviours and attributes that have driven the success or failure of the given social enterprise, together with evaluating the applicability of different models of entrepreneurship in the context of the given organisation

Therefore, our programmes aim is to unearth the intrinsic wellbeing in all people and point them to where their experience of life is coming from in the moment. So instead of the thinking that tells us experience comes from external factors, we demonstrate how people’s experience is coming completely from their own use of thought in the moment.

The changes we hope for are that as people access their own innate well-being, and as they realise the ‘inside out’ nature of life, they get better. They feel better, their life gets easier, and they start to see different things about their lives.

The exciting phase of our work is The Academy, where participants can continue to be involved after their release from prison.

From our peer mentor and pilot practitioner programmes within prisons, we have seen our graduates become more deeply impacted and compelled to share this understanding with others.

Our vision is for these graduates to become the teachers.

With their life experience and deep understanding, we are already seeing powerful teachers emerge who will be the ones making changes in their own communities and the world.
