This assignment involves preparation of an individual written essay on understanding about the value of finance function and its relationship with other business functions as well as understanding of budgetary techniques used in organisational planning, control and decision making.

 

This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the following module learning outcomes:

Understand the value of finance and its relationship with the other business functions, and how financial statements are used by the owner, manager, or an external party, irrespective of the size of the business.

 

Assignment Task

 

 

Overview:

 

 

The assignment encourages students to acquire an understanding about importance of finance function in an organisation and fundamental concepts of budgetary techniques used for organisational planning, control, and decision making.

 

 

Description of task:

You are required to produce an essay on accounting and budgeting functions and their relationship with internal and external stakeholders of an organisation using a wide variety of research materials. You must show evidence of research by giving in-text-citations and a complete references list. It is an excellent practice to provide in-text citations after every 5 - 6 lines at level 0.

 

Essay Guidelines

An essay of approximately 1500 words that discusses the following:

Use a variety of research materials to produce an essay, where you are required to:

  • Define and discuss the fundamental concept of budgeting and its role in organisational planning, control, and decision making.
  • Define and discuss the finance function and its relationship with three other functions within the organisation such as Marketing, Production and Human Resources.
  • Discuss how financial statements are used by the relevant stakeholders such as owners, managers, or other external parties e-g; Suppliers, Banks and HMRC.

 

The essay must include the following paragraphs

 

a) An introduction - ( 150 words )

The purpose, contents’ structure, and flow of the essay for reader

b) Discuss the concepts of budget and its use in planning, control and decision making ( 400 words )

  • Define and briefly explain, what is budgeting?
  • Discuss three different types of budgets.
  • Briefly explain, how budgets are used for in planning, control and decision making?

c)  Define and discuss the finance function and its relationship with three other functions within the organisation such as Marketing, Production and Human Resources ( 400 words )

  • Define and briefly explain, what is finance function in an organisation?
  • Discuss the relationship of finance function with marketing, production, and human resource management functions.

d) Discuss how financial statements are used by the relevant stakeholders such as owners, managers or other external parties e-g; Suppliers, Banks and HMRC ( 400 words )

  • Explain how financial statements are used by owner, manager, supplier, HMRC etc

e) Conclusion - ( 150 words )

A suggested format would be to create one paragraph of approximately 400 words each, within the main body of the essay for each of the questions. The remaining 300 words should be used for the introduction and conclusion of the essay.

Your work will be assessed on the extent to which it demonstrates your achievement of the stated learning outcomes for this assignment (see above) and against other key criteria, as defined in the University’s institutional grading descriptors. If it is appropriate to the format of your assignment and your subject area, a proportion of your marks will also depend upon your use of academic referencing conventions.

This assignment will be marked according to the grading descriptors for Level 0

This assignment should be submitted electronically via Moodle (module tutors will discuss this process with you during class time).

  • Please ensure that your work has been saved in an appropriate file format (Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or PDF are the most widely used; Google Docs is also accepted). Your file must also contain at least 20 words of text, consist of fewer than 400 pages and be less than 40MB in size.
  • You can submit your work as many times as you like before the submission date. If you do submit your work more than once, your earlier submission will be replaced by the most recent version.
  • Once you have submitted your work, you will receive a digital receipt as proof of submission, which will be sent to your forwarded e-mail address (provided you have set this up). Please keep this receipt for future reference, along with the original electronic copy of your assignment

You should submit all work for summative assessments by the above deadline. The five percent penalty per day will be applied to the work submitted up to seven working days after the deadline, after which a mark of 0 will be recorded. The five percent penalty will be five percent of eligible mark.

Provision at Level 3 (often forming part of a Foundation Year course) is designed to prepare students for higher education. At the end of Level 3, students will be expected to demonstrate the acquisition of foundation level skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to embark on a higher education programme of study at Level 4.
