Tasks Requirements

AMY Networks is a consultancy business that designs, installs and operates different wireless and wired networks for enterprises and research organisations. As one of their project leaders, you have been asked to respond to an ITT (Invitation to Tender) for this network design (see last section of this document).  The network solution will include the wireless sensor network logical design along with protocols specifications.

The ITT document is included with this ICA.  The tender that you produce in response to the ITT should take the following form.

Part 1 – Design

You need to respond to the ITT with the following documents: -

  • Logical Design: Wireless sensor network via packet tracer.
  • Logical design and implementation of the WSN deployment.
  • Design and implement an addressing scheme for WSN(for example, IPv6 equivalent). You can use Packet tracer to implement the IP scheme.

Part 2 – Design Report (4000 words)

The report must provide:

Protocols Stack and Security

  • A discussion of energy-efficient protocols for the wireless sensor network.
  • Discuss security issues at the application, transport, internet and data link layer, including identifying and mitigating the logical and physical security attacks and risks.

Conclusion/Reflection

  • Practical and insightful conclusions drawn from the research.
  • A full discussion about the nature of future developments should be included.

The discussion should include a plan for integrating the different network protocols into the new network design. Your argument must be supported by published research or simulation.

Part 3 – Presentation

Marks will be awarded for the overall presentation of your work.  Your work should be of a professional standard

Marking Criteria

Part 1- Design (15%)

Logical Design (10%)

To obtain maximum marks you need to:

  • Produce and implement a detailed, documented network diagram in response to the information provided in the ITT.  Your design will consist of diagrams for the wireless sensor network
  • Your design should clearly show the measures you have included that address the technical requirements.  The design document should be professionally presented using a tool such as Visio.

Addressing scheme (5%)

To obtain maximum marks you need to:

  • The design should include a valid network addressing solution along with explanation and implementation . The addressing scheme must map to the design diagram and the technical requirements

Part 2 – Design Report (4000 words) 75%

Protocols and Security (65%)

To obtain maximum marks:

  • The report must clearly identify and discuss the relevant protocols, security issues and solutions along with hardware used to design this network and how the protocols meet the requirements in the ITT.
  • The report must provide a description for the model, design and all of the decisions that you have made in the process of developing the design and how these are linked to the technical requirements describe in the ITT

Conclusion and Reflection (10%)

To obtain maximum marks:

  • The report should include realistic and insightful conclusions drawn from the research.  and
    - A full discussion about the nature of future developments is included.

Part 3 – Presentation (5%)

To obtain maximum marks:

  • Ensure all of your documents are word processed or produced using suitable tools.
  • Ensure all documents are clear, and easy to read with few errors.
  • Use professional presentation methods:
  • Table of contents (where appropriate)
  • Version control information
  • Supported by diagrams/graphics where appropriate
  • Ensure all documents are clearly labelled with your name and the document title.
  • All sources of information must be referenced and cited.

Wireless Sensor Network

Invitation to Tender

1. Introduction

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) comprised of tiny devices with a capability of sensing, communication and computation are spread over a physical environment, perhaps for a limited period, with a common objective to collaborate to provide a distributed and robust sensing, storage, and communication service. These devices can be dispersed over a hostile battlefield or harsh environment to achieve a task. Wireless sensor networks have an enormous potential impact in the future in many fields such as military, civil, health and habitat monitoring.

2. Project Overview

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection would like to deploy a wireless sensor network on Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park. The network will feed live data to the nearby control processing centre via a long-distance wireless link.

The project is looking to deploy approximately 1000 custom-built battery-operated wireless sensors. The sensors must operate on a globally compatible ISM band with a direct sequence spread spectrum. The sensors should have an expansion connector for light, temperature, RH, Barometric, Pressure, Seismic, acoustic sensors. Battery-powered WSN usually has a limited lifetime. The primary goal of this project is to come up with novel communication strategies that will maximise the life of these battery-operated sensors.

The project intends to share this live data with the scientific community across the globe. This will require a web server built into the design.

The scope of this project is limited to a new secure communication protocol design for WSN. Security must be considered across the complete protocol stack.

3. Technical Requirements

  • Energy efficient Protocols specification required for
  • Network Layer
  • Mac Layer
  • Physical Layer
  • Security
  • The protocols must ensure efficient and uniform consumption of energy across the network.
  • Frequency choice for sensor node communication within the network.
  • Long distance communication link must be specified.
  • Logical addressing scheme (Equivalent of IPv4 or 6).
  • Enhanced Security solution across the three layers.

4. Cost Information Required

For this exercise, no cost information is required though information on power saving can be included.
